# Will redesigning my website hurt my Google rankings?

**Summary:** A redesign only hurts rankings when the move is done carelessly. Rankings drop when URLs change without permanent redirects, when pages that ranked are deleted or merged, when the text that matched searches is replaced with slogans, or when the new site is slower or blocks search engines. Mapping every URL with traffic or links to its new address, redirecting each one, keeping or improving the content that ranks, and monitoring Search Console after launch protects rankings and often improves them.

## Why rankings drop

Google ranks pages, not websites. When a page that ranked disappears, or moves
to a new address without a redirect, Google treats it as gone, along with the
links other sites pointed at it. A redesign that changes every URL and redirects
nothing can lose years of accumulated visibility in a few weeks.

The other common causes are quieter: service pages merged into one, detailed
text replaced with short marketing lines, a new site that loads slower than the
old one, or a staging setting that tells search engines not to index the new
site, left on by mistake at launch.

## The steps that protect rankings

1. **Export what ranks.** From Search Console and analytics, list every URL with
traffic, rankings or links from other sites.
2. **Map each URL** to its equivalent on the new site.
3. **Redirect with 301s**, one to one, not everything to the home page.
4. **Keep the substance.** Pages that ranked keep their topic and their depth,
rewritten for clarity rather than cut.
5. **Check before launch**: indexing allowed, sitemap updated, structured data
in place, speed at least as good.
6. **Watch after launch.** Crawl errors and ranking changes in Search Console
for the following weeks, with anything that slips fixed quickly.

## Often it improves things

Done properly, a redesign is a chance to fix what held the old site back: speed,
mobile usability, thin pages and missing local pages. A careful move usually
ends with the site ranking better than before.
