# Website Care and Management Plans

**Summary:** Website care is the day-to-day management of a small business website for a fixed monthly fee: software updates, backups, security monitoring, hosting, uptime checks, and the content changes that otherwise never happen, such as new opening hours, menus, prices, photos and seasonal offers.

A website is not finished at launch. The menu changes, prices go up, a new
service starts, a photo looks dated, a plugin needs a security update, and the
domain renewal email lands in a spam folder. None of it is hard, but for a
business owner running a restaurant, a workshop or a shop, none of it is ever
urgent enough to get done.

A care plan makes it someone's job.

## What happens each month

- **Updates.** Software, themes and plugins are updated on a copy of the site
  first, then on the live site once nothing has broken.
- **Backups.** Daily, stored away from the hosting account, with a restore
  tested regularly. A backup that has never been restored is a hope, not a
  backup.
- **Monitoring.** Uptime, certificate expiry, domain renewal and security alerts
  all come to us.
- **Content changes.** Send a message with the new opening hours, the summer
  menu or the price list, and it is live within a few working days.
- **A short note.** What was done, anything that needs a decision, and any quick
  wins worth considering.

## Day-to-day management, not just maintenance

Most of the value is in the changes rather than the updates. A restaurant with a
current menu, a trade business showing this year's projects, a shop with the
right stock online: these are what customers notice. The plan covers a fixed
amount of change each month, and larger pieces of work are quoted before they
start.

## Sites we did not build

We take over existing sites too, including WordPress, PrestaShop and custom
builds. The first month starts with a check of the site, the hosting and who
holds which passwords, because on inherited sites that last question is often
the hardest one.

## Frequently asked questions

### What does website maintenance include?

Keeping the software up to date, taking backups and checking they restore, watching for downtime and security problems, renewing the domain and certificate, and making the small content changes a business needs every month: hours, prices, menus, photos, offers. You get a short note each month listing what was done.

### Can you look after a site you did not build?

Usually. We start with a check of the site, the hosting and who holds the passwords, and fix anything urgent first. A small number of sites are in such poor shape that maintaining them costs more than replacing them, and if that is the case we will tell you.

### What happens if the site goes down?

Monitoring alerts us, usually before you notice. Most outages are hosting or certificate problems and are fixed within hours. If an update or an attack has broken something, the site is restored from the most recent clean backup.

### Who owns the website and the domain?

You do. The domain is registered in your name, and you keep ownership of the site and its content. If you ever move to someone else, you get full access and a complete backup.
